Mitts are gloves without fingers or with shortened fingers. Even novice knitters with no experience can knit not only simple mitts on two knitting needles, but also create a real masterpiece. It all depends on the desire and height of the flight of fantasy.

Depending on the material from which the products are knitted, the pattern, and the design, mitts are a spectacular accessory for ladies' clothing, emphasizing originality and individuality. The aesthetics of the products is combined with functionality: they do not protect your hands from the cold in spring and autumn, but make it possible to talk on a cell phone, drive a motorcycle and a car, do makeup, comb your hair, and count out money.

Types of mitts:

  1. “Pipe” without fingers.
  2. “Pipe” with a wedge for the thumb.
  3. “Pipe” with a shortened thumb.
  4. Gloves with short fingers.

Knitting mitts with knitting needles is not difficult for beginners. Not everyone likes to knit in the round on 5 needles - it’s awkward to hold, the needles fly out, and the rows get confused. Skills will come with time. The first two types of mitts can be successfully knitted on two knitting needles with a straight fabric, then sewed into a pipe. I offer several types of mitts for beginners to knit, starting with the easiest first option.

Preparing to knit mitts on two knitting needles

Before you start knitting, you need to prepare materials and tools.

You need to start by choosing a model. Consider whether knitting patterns or descriptions are needed. Not everyone knows how to read patterns, although it is much easier to knit using them. Therefore, if you have chosen mitts with a more complex pattern, it is advisable to include both diagrams and a description of the pattern.

The choice of material depends on the purpose of the mitts. To be worn in the autumn-spring period, mittens are knitted from warm yarn, preferably with the addition of wool and animal down. For the summer period, thin yarn of cotton, silk, with the addition of metallized threads is suitable. The requirement for any yarn is evenness in the spinning and twisting of the threads. When using different colored threads, remember that they must be the same in thickness and quality. The amount of yarn depends on the length of the product: they can cover only the hand, or they can be up to the elbow or even up to the shoulder.

Necessary tools: knitting needles, a needle with a large eye. The size of the knitting needles must match the selected yarn. The size of the knitting needles is usually indicated on the packages. The needle should have such an eye that you can thread a knitting thread into it, and its end should be blunt.

Before you start knitting, you need to knit a sample of the pattern in order to accurately calculate the number of loops needed. Wet the sample with water and dry it flat on a smooth surface.

How to knit the simplest mitts on two knitting needles

Beginners who have only learned the knit stitch can practice knitting mitts in garter stitch. What’s easier is to knit a straight fabric and then sew it into a pipe. You can knit these mittens in an evening. Cross garter stitch is like an elastic band and fits tightly around the arm. You can wear mitts knitted from two colors of thread in different ways: wear them with the light or dark side out.

Will need

  • light yarn – 20 g;
  • dark yarn – 20 g;
  • 2 knitting needles No. 3 (No. 3.5);
  • needle;
  • scissors.

Garter stitch pattern description

Garter stitch is the easiest knitting pattern. No diagram needed. Only knit stitches are made on the front and back sides.

Knitting mitts in cross garter stitch

Let's start knitting with a light thread. The mitts are not long, so we cast on a small number of stitches on the knitting needles - 30. Knit a straight fabric with garter stitch to the width of the palm approximately 7.5 cm. The number of loops can vary depending on the width of the palm.

Attach a dark colored thread. Knit the same number of loops.

By attaching a light-colored thread, knit 1 row.

Close all loops.

Product assembly

Sew the edges of the fabric, leaving a gap for your thumb.

Knit and assemble the second mitt in the same way.

Openwork mitts for beginners

Knitting elegant fingerless gloves with an openwork pattern is not a problem for beginners who have learned how to do yarn overs. When knitting a simple openwork pattern “Hemstitch”, it turns out with a slope, which will give the gloves a unique attractiveness. Knit long mitts or short ones - the choice is yours.

Will need

  • “Iris” type yarn – 40/80 g (for short or long);
  • 2 knitting needles No. 3;

Diagram describing the pattern “Merezhka”

The pattern repeat consists of only 2 rows. The number of loops should be a multiple of 3 + 2 edge loops. You don't even need a pattern pattern to knit this pattern, it's so simple.

1st row – 1 edge, 1 knit, * 1 yarn over, 2 knit stitches together behind the back walls, 1 knit *, repeat from * to *, 1 knit, 1 edge.

2nd row – 1 edge stitch, purl all stitches, 1 edge stitch.

3rd row – continue from 1st row.

The gloves are knitted straight from the bottom up. For knitting a mitt, we cast on 44 loops for a thin hand. Work 4 rows with knit stitches (garter stitch).

Continue knitting with the Hemstitch pattern. Knit straight to desired height.

Work 4 rows with knit stitches (garter stitch).

Close all loops.

Product assembly

Sew the edges of the fabric. Don't forget to leave a hole for your thumb.

Women's hand skin is particularly delicate and requires special care. However, various care products are not able to completely protect thin skin from frost and autumn winds. That is why various mittens and gloves will never go out of fashion; they not only save you from the cold, but are also excellent accessories. Moreover, knitting any model of such an accessory with knitting needles is not difficult.

Recently, knitted fingerless gloves, that is, mittens, have become popular. Read the diagram and description of the process of knitting mitts just below.

Gloves need the right yarn

It may seem that for warm gloves it is worth choosing threads with thick fibers. Of course, you can prefer rough, but practical and warm wool. But still, gloves, mittens and mittens are sophisticated accessories that should emphasize the elegance of a woman’s hand.

Choose yarn without development or any inclusions, for example, fluffy inserts.

The ideal option for knitting gloves is thin stretch wool. If you were unable to find such yarn in the store, then angora will do, but without the fleece. Do not buy synthetic threads under any circumstances.

A little trick - the gloves will turn out much more elegant and delicate if you work with thin knitting needles. An excellent option would be knitting needles with a diameter of 1.5 millimeters.

Scheme and description of the process

Tools and materials:

— 4 thin knitting needles;

- about 100 grams of yarn;

- several pins;

So, if you have decided to try knitting mitts with knitting needles and have purchased everything you need for this, then it’s time to get to work. In this example, the number of loops is designed for a small and slender hand. If your wrist is a little larger, then you should add the required number of loops at the base.

The first stage is to cast on at least 55 stitches with knitting needles. Next, knit 16 or 18 rows of wrist stitches using the rib stitch. Alternating 3 knit stitches and 2 purl stitches. So, the wrist is ready.

Having finished knitting with an elastic pattern, you need to knit the first half of the stitches with regular knit stitches, and for subsequent stitches choose some intricate pattern. If your goal is fingerless gloves for spring, then you can choose an original openwork pattern. In the case of the winter option, it is best to give preference to a dense pattern, for example, braids.

Thumb wedge

Using the pattern, knit the next 5 rows without any changes. Thus, you have reached row 6, where you need to start working on the thumb wedge. The first step is to outline the loop. Now, on both sides of it, gradually, namely every 3 rows, add 1 loop. It is necessary to add until 14 additional loops are formed on the fabric.

Step six - slip 13 wedge loops onto a pin and cast on 6 loops at the back to tie the jumper. Continue working on the main part of the glove. Every 2 rows, decrease 2 stitches evenly. As a result, a kind of triangle should form. At the end of knitting, there will be 2 loops left on the jumper. You should again have the original 55 stitches.

Let's get to the little finger

Next comes work on the main fabric of the product. Do not forget to constantly try on. So, you have reached the little finger, on one side of which you need to leave 7 loops open, on the other, 6 loops. Now from 4 loops they turn into a jumper, which will serve as the basis for the little finger. Using the same pattern, knit the bases for two adjacent fingers. When you reach the index finger, remember to knit the stitches in the round. Try on the glove periodically. Knit the remaining fingers in the same way.

Finishing knitting

The work on the mitts is almost complete. What remains is the thumb, which can only be knitted using stockinette stitch. Having finished with your thumb, remove all the loops from the pin, and pick up the remaining ones from the edge of the fabric. You should have 23 loops arranged in a circle. All that remains is to knit the required length. Your glove is ready! Using the same principle, start working on the second glove. Once you get used to the process of working on mittens, you can experiment and try to knit men’s fingerless gloves or children’s gloves, decorating them with various decorative elements.

Modernized version

If you love fingerless gloves, but have no idea how to wear them in cold weather, then try a slightly different option. Sew the top of the mitten to the finished fingerless gloves on the outside of the hand. This option is ideal if you are outside for a long time. Whether you work or walk with children on a frosty day, it doesn’t matter. You can always cover your fingers that are frozen in the cold and warm them up like in a mitten, and if necessary, fold back the top.

A fashionable thing knitted with your own hands is always doubly fashionable. It reflects not only modern trends, but also the soul and imagination of the craftswoman. Even the simplest knitted hats, scarves, and mittens are superior in style to expensive designer works. A novice craftswoman can create such cute little things. Today we will learn how to knit mitts with knitting needles - a variation of gloves or mittens.

What are mitts and where did they come from?

Mitts are fingerless gloves. Their history goes back to the Middle Ages, when this accessory was necessary to protect the hands of shooters from the cold: pulling the bowstring and holding the arrow with ordinary gloves was extremely inconvenient. And in the 18th century. The ladies paid attention to them, and a new life began for the work clothes.

From a piece of work clothing, they have turned into an exquisite ladies' accessory. They were used for their intended purpose - to protect delicate ladies' hands from the cold, and as an addition to the evening dress - lace, decorated with skillful embroidery and precious stones.

Today, mittens have not lost their relevance. They are not only convenient for using phones, they are an indispensable element of clothing for sports motorists, motorcyclists, and cyclists. They are very popular among young people, not so much for warmth, but as a sign of belonging to a subculture.

Adults wear them in winter instead of traditional gloves. In spring or autumn, long, elbow-length mittens are complemented by fashionable jackets with short sleeves. Openwork options made of fine silk yarn perfectly complement the classic evening dress.

Let's focus on mittens that directly perform their function - to keep warm. They can be no less exquisite than those of medieval ladies, even made from the simplest materials, in our case - knitted.

Simple mitts for beginners

Knitting an accessory is easier than mittens, let alone gloves. After all, they often don’t have fingers, which means their work is simplified. If socks or mittens are considered an excellent start for beginning knitters, then knitting mitts is a piece of cake if the young knittress knows how to hold knitting needles in her hands and knit basic stitches.

Mitts with two knitting needles

So, we knit simple warm mittens, without fingers, completely covering the wrist. Their pattern is a rectangle, the width of which is the girth of the hand, the height is the required length. How to take measurements is shown in the figure.

Our products will have a seam, which for simplicity we will place along the thumb. We will also choose a simple pattern - stocking stitch with 1x1 elastic, decorating the bottom and top.

To work you will need:

  • skein;
  • knitting needles of the appropriate size.

Step one. Let's calculate how many loops we need to cast on. To calculate, we will knit a sample - a piece of fabric made in stocking stitch, measuring 12-15 cm in length and width. Then we iron our sample through a damp cloth.

We take a centimeter, apply it to the sample, calculate how many loops fit into 10 cm and how many rows will need to be knitted to gain the same height. It is better to immediately write down the results in a notebook with a note about what yarn (composition) was used, its manufacturer, knitting needle number, type of knitting (in our case, hosiery).

If we are not lazy and regularly make such notes, we will subsequently save ourselves from wasting time on knitting a sample.

The edge loops are not included in the calculation; they are added when casting.

Step two. We cast on the required number of loops. We knit with an elastic band 1x1 (1 knit, 1 purl) 2 cm. Then we continue knitting with stockinette stitch. When 2 cm remains to the selected height, continue working with a 1x1 elastic band. Having knitted the missing 2 cm, close the loops.

Step three. Mitts are a steamy thing. Therefore, we knit the second one - exactly the same way as we knitted the first one, only we don’t need calculations - we wrote everything down.

Step four. We steam our two rectangles, i.e., iron them with a hot iron through a damp cloth.

Step five. We sew our parts together. At the same time, it is important not to forget to leave a gap for the thumb. Place your palm on the knitted rectangle and mark with pins where this gap will be. It is better to sew seams from the edges to the finger, this will make it easier to hide the tails of the threads.

Our very simple mitts are ready. They are shaped like a pipe, and that’s what they are called – pipe mittens. All that remains is to figure out how to decorate them. Here you can give free rein to your imagination - sew on appliqués, embroidery, beads, rhinestones, even small bright buttons. Knowing how to crochet from simple pipes you can create a real masterpiece.

If the idea captures you, you can gradually complicate the work - knit a flap for the thumb, knit all the fingers, use different patterns, combine yarn of different colors.

Knitting mitts with four knitting needles

An accessory with partially knitted fingers is best knitted on 4 knitting needles. If the technique of knitting socks or mittens is familiar to us, we will quickly cope with the task.

We need:

  • a skein of thin yarn;
  • set of sock knitting needles size 2.5.

We knit the mitts, as in the previous case, with stocking stitch and 1x1 elastic. We assume that the calculation showed that you will need to cast on 72 loops.

Step one. We cast on the loops. Let's start knitting an elastic band. Having knitted the first 18 stitches, take the second knitting needle, which will also have 18 knitted loops, and so on. We knit 25 rows with an elastic band.

Step two. We continue to work with stocking stitch. Having knitted 15 rows, we make a wedge for knitting the thumb: on the first knitting needle we knit 17 stitches, pick up 1 chain stitch from the gap, knit the 18th.

Step three. On the second knitting needle we knit the first loop, pick up 1 knit stitch from the gap, and knit further. We don’t make 3-4 additions.

Step four. We knit two rows without adding anything. We increase in every third row before the last loop on the 1st needle, after the first - on the second. In total we need to add 9 points each.

Step five. On the first knitting needle we knit 18 stitches, the remaining 9 are removed with a pin. From the second we remove the first 9 stitches and knit further. Let's not forget to tighten the working thread a little so that we don't have a hole.

Step six. We knit 10 rows. In the 11th row, from the 3rd knitting needle we remove the last 9 stitches onto a pin, from the 4th – the first 9 stitches - we made the little finger. We knit another row without changes, then again remove 9 stitches from 3-4 knitting needles for the ring finger. Through a row of loops we remove on the first and second, also 9 each, for the index finger. We have 18 stitches left for the middle finger, and we will continue to work to completely design it: we knit 10 rows in a circle, close the work.

Step seven and beyond. We knit all the fingers one by one, using three knitting needles; working with four will be inconvenient.

To make the fingers fit better, when knitting them, add one knit stitch in between them.

What patterns are used to knit mitts?

We looked at the simplest option - stocking stitch with elastic. You can knit them in a variety of patterns, but in this case the number of pattern repeat loops is taken into account. Sometimes you have to spend some time to arrange it symmetrically.

Subtleties of knitting mitts with braids

Braids, plaits, arans on knitted products are always relevant. Most of them are easy to knit; it is only important to position the pattern correctly on the fabric. To avoid confusion, we follow the algorithm:

  1. After the calculation, we determine how many pattern repeats (plaits, braids, arans) we can fit. We proceed from the fact that we place the plaits or braids on the outside of the mitts, and on the side of the palm we will knit with the front (or purl) stitch. In other words, we calculate the number of motifs as half of the stitches cast on. This must be an integer.
  2. We take a piece of paper in a box, draw a diagram of the drawing - 1, 2, 3 or more motifs - as many as we count.
  3. We count the loops according to our drawing, if there are fewer of them, then we begin to draw one on the right and left until there are exactly as many of them as needed.

If we knit with two knitting needles, the pattern will be located on the right half of the fabric of the left and on the left half of the fabric of the right mitt. When knitting in four, we knit the braids 1-2 for the left hand, 3-4 for the right.

We knit the fingers (if we make them) in stockinette stitch or with elastic.

Features of knitting mitts with a dense pattern

There are quite a few dense patterns for knitting. When choosing a suitable pattern, pay attention to the number of loops in the repeat. Depending on the pattern, there are from 2 to 10-20. The more there are, the more difficult it will be for us to knit a pattern without distortion.

We select one so that its repeat is a multiple of the calculated number of loops, in extreme cases more or less by one in the end: let’s say we need to cast on 60 stitches, the pattern is built on 4. We have 15 motifs that fit perfectly. If 7 points are needed to complete the motive, we will have problems. It's better to choose a different pattern.

The nuances of knitting openwork mitts

Thin openwork mittens look very impressive; they perfectly complement evening or weekend dresses. The work will be painstaking, but worth the result. When choosing an openwork pattern, they are guided by the same principles as when knitting dense patterns: the estimated number of loops is a multiple of their number in the repeat.

All of the above rules apply to knitting men's and children's options. They knit with patterns or smooth ones, in different colors, and for children you can allow bold experiments, for example, red left and blue right handles.

Knitting mitts is not difficult, the costs are low: one pair of long ones takes about 100 g of yarn. Over the course of an evening or two, your wardrobe will be replenished with a new accessory. You can give such a thing to a friend, sister, or make your kids happy.

Perfect for winter weather or cool summer weather. Such a thing can be in the wardrobe of both children and adults. Therefore, learning how to knit such a detail will be very useful for you. Moreover, something created with your own hands is always pleasant to wear, especially since you can make any model you want, based on your tastes and imagination. You can knit gloves with your own hands in different ways. The most common way is using stocking needles.

At first glance, for those who have just started, the lesson may seem very complex and incomprehensible. On the one hand, the work is really labor-intensive and requires special attention. But on the other hand, it’s quite possible to do it, you just need to be more patient and look at the basic principles.

How to knit gloves with stocking needles: general rules and recommendations

Taking measurements from hands

  • In order for the product to be neat and the gloves to sit well on the hand, accurately fitting its shape, gloves are best knitted from thin woolen fabric or with wool additives. So you can choose angora yarn and not forget about thin knitting needles.
  • It is recommended to make the knitted product several centimeters narrower than the circumference of the future wearer’s arm. If the knitting has an elastic pattern or elastic yarn, then this rule also applies. If you do it in stocking stitch, then subtract 1 cm from the arm circumference.
  • Before you start knitting gloves, like any other product, you need to measure the required circumference, length and width. Count the stitches to ensure the gloves fit exactly.
  • As shown in the picture, you need to measure the circumference of your hand just above the thumb. Next, we need the height from the beginning of the hand to the beginning of the thumb, then measure from the beginning of the little finger to the base of the index finger.
  • the number of first loops can be calculated using the formula: knitting density, which is calculated horizontally, or the number of loops in one centimeter of the product is multiplied by the arm circumference.
  • The product can be knitted either from the bottom up or in the fingers. Now you know a couple of tips on how to knit gloves correctly. Let's look a little more closely at these two ways of knitting gloves.

We knit children's gloves with 5 knitting needles from fingers

How to knit beautiful gloves with knitting needles

If you are just starting to knit, then you need to start with small items. Therefore, in this case, it is best to try knitting children's gloves. Therefore, it’s worth looking at how to knit children’s gloves, the stages and secrets. The girth of the handle will be 13 cm:

  • cast on six loops for each of the four fingers, not counting the thumb. Next you should knit it like this:
  • The loops need to be thrown onto three knitting needles, two each, and knit the fabric in a circle using stockinette stitch. The second row is knitted from each stitch, two knit stitches, so that the number of stitches is doubled. Next, knit the finger to the required size according to the pattern you chose. For the little finger you need to knit 36 mm in height, and for the ring and middle fingers 0.5 cm, 45 mm for the index. After you knit each finger except the little finger, the loops need to be thrown onto pins or auxiliary knitting needles. All this is done to prevent them from blooming. Next, you can tear off the thread and sew up the fingers.
  • When you have knitted all the details, you need to transfer the finger loops onto 4 knitting needles, so that there is a certain order. As a result, there should be a pair of fingers on two knitting needles, which are located on both sides of the product.
  • the next step begins with knitting the little finger where you stopped the working thread. You need to knit in stockinette stitch, while knitting the last couple of pinky stitches together. Next, the first 2 loops of the ring finger halves need to be knitted together. Next, a simple fabric is knitted. In the same way, you need to knit all the finger loops in a circle. In this case, you need to decrease the halves of the finger first at the end, and then at the beginning.
  • Then you should continue knitting in a circle until the glove reaches the beginning of the thumb.
  • the thumb must be knitted separately on three knitting needles and also start with six loops, and then add 12 loops each. The product of the finger itself must be knitted to a height of 30 mm, and after that two times through the row it is necessary to add one loop on both sides of the finger.
  • after you have tied the finger, you need to attach it to the glove itself, while tying the fabric in a circle, capturing the loops of the fingers. And don’t forget to decrease at the beginning and end of each half of the finger. The next row decreases by 4 stitches, two on each side.
  • Next, the first loop of the thumb is knitted together with the last loop of the palm piece and, on the other hand, the last loop of the thumb is knitted together with the top side of the glove piece. In this way, it is necessary to make decreases until the number of loops is equal to the number that was before attaching the thumb.
  • The last step is to knit the beginning of the glove with a 1x1 or 2x2 rib pattern until you reach the required height. After this, we can assume that the first glove is ready.
  • the second glove should be knitted according to the same principle, but only adhere to the mirror image of the location of the fingers.

This can be used for men's and women's gloves. To do this, you just need to choose the right size and choose the appropriate pattern.

We knit women's gloves from the bottom up, from the cuff to the fingers

How to knit gloves from the cuff to the fingers

This product - do-it-yourself gloves from bottom to top is suitable for a hand circumference of 20 cm, it is knitted with thin woolen threads in the following sequence:

  1. cuff. You need to cast on 52 stitches to start the cuff and distribute them on stocking needles. Next we knit 13 rows using a 1x1 rib pattern. You can also knit rows of elastic alternating threads of different colors.
  2. wedges the beginning of the thumb. When you knit this element, you need to make additions. For the left hand at the end of the row with the fourth needle, and for the right at the beginning. Let's start with the right hand. You need to make a yarn over on the first needle at the beginning of the row. Then knit one loop and yarn over again, but we knit the remaining loops in stocking stitch. Next, we begin to perform increases in every fourth row, and we also need to yarn over at the beginning of the row, but after that we knit 3, and then in the next increment row 5 stitches. And so on, each time adding two loops. And then we make a new yarn over and continue knitting in the round. The additions must be made before the start of the thumb, or when the height of the glove is 6 cm. Then the loops that you added to the wedge must be thrown onto two pins. Throw 7 on the first, and 6 on the second. Next, on the fifth knitting needle you need to get 6 loops, which are added to the product when the process of tying a new row of gloves in a circle occurs. Next, in each row, new loops need to be reduced by two, by tying 2 loops together at the beginning and end of the row. This must be done until only one loop remains. The next step is to tie the glove to the beginning of the little finger. That is, three more rows. Next, you need to divide the fabric of the product into appropriate parts for all the remaining fingers. It turns out that you need 8 shares for the back and outside of the fingers. In this example, there are 13 loops for each finger. But since the circumference for each finger is slightly different, you need to throw the loops for each finger onto pins and distribute their number as follows: you need to allocate 13 loops for the little and middle fingers, 11 for the ring finger, and 15 for the index finger. Next, you need to knit each finger separately. You can start with the index finger. To do this, you need to place the loops that you left on the finger knitting on the stocking needles in this way. First knit 4 loops and throw them onto the first knitting needle. Then you need to knit a second loop and knit 3 loops on it. Then add one more to them. You need to put two new loops on the third knitting needle, then tie three more onto it. And the 5 that remain must be tied onto the next knitting needle. The fabric for the finger needs to be knitted in a circle until the very moment when the nail begins. Next, you should round it off using decreases at the beginning of the row on knitting needles 1 and 3, and at the end on knitting needles 2 and 4. You must continue knitting until there are six loops left on the knitting needles, which are then knitted together.
  3. the remaining fingers should be knitted in the same way. Only for the middle finger there should be three times five loops on the knitting needles and one time four. For the ring finger it turns out three times 4 and 1 time 5; for the little finger there should be 4 loops on the knitting needles.
  4. for the thumb you need to distribute the loops as follows. All loops from the pin must be transferred to an auxiliary needle. Next, you need to knit 5 loops on the 1st and 2nd needles. The last three loops must be knitted with a stocking needle and 2 new loops must be added to them, which are knitted from the edge of the thumb hole. For the last knitting needle, you need to knit five loops from the main fabric. Then the process becomes similar.
  5. The second gloves are knitted according to the same pattern, but at the beginning you need to correct some points. After all, two gloves are a mirror image of each other.
